A teacher who wanted to make a difference ...
BACKGROUND

Shelley GaudetAs a teacher, Shelley Gaudet always had one or two students in her classroom each year who struggled with reading. She worked hard to help these students, feeling that they were ‘slipping through the cracks’ of the educational system. Through a colleague at her school, Shelley learned about the Canadian Dyslexia Association and remediation programs for struggling readers. Shelley immediately began using these new multi-sensory teaching methods and saw success for the first time in the eyes of her weakest readers. Armed with these new materials but hindered by time restraints within the school system, Shelley decided to open up a home tutoring business in April of 2003. Her very first student was her cousin John (aged 17). John had been diagnosed with Dyslexia as a young child, and had always struggled with reading. The multi-sensory techniques proved to be very successful with John, improving his grade scores in Reading over 3 grade levels. John's boss at work, unaware that he was receiving tutoring, asked him one day what he was doing different because he could actually read his writing! John, like a number of Dyslexic students, tended to write messy if he didn't know how to spell a word, in order to hide his difficulties.

Four months after the opening of Learning Solutions, word had spread about the successes of Shelley's students, leading to the hiring of two additional tutors. By the end of 2004, Shelley's clientele and staff had grown so much that it was necessary to move to an outside office in Brantford, Ontario.

Multi-Sensory Reading Program and an Operations Math program

While tutoring students ranging in age from Kindergarten to Adult, Shelley gained a lot of insight into why students struggle with reading and math. Based on these experiences, she designed a Multi-Sensory Reading Program and an Operations Math program. These programs have proved highly successful, leading to greatly improved scores and overall self-confidence. These programs form the core of the programming at Learning Solutions today, and are continuously being modified to meet the individual needs of the students.

The Learning Solutions office currently resides at 84 Charing Cross Street in Brantford. There are 11 1-1 tutoring stations set up throughout the centre offering children and adults privacy and comfort while their tutoring sessions occur. There is also a large waiting room for parents to enjoy if they desire while their child is being tutored.
